About Hobbs & Wheeler

Born of experience

Some places have a way of drawing you back.

The mountains. The sea. Places where the landscape still sets the terms, where weather matters, where days take on a different rhythm and where the distance from ordinary life feels just a little greater.

Hobbs & Wheeler grew from a love of those places, and from years spent discovering how best to experience them.

It remains, at heart, a passion project.

Not an exercise in collecting destinations, but in knowing them.

A question of time

The great luxury of travel is not simply where you go. It is time.

A week with family. A few days with old friends. A birthday, an anniversary, a long-awaited return to somewhere special. These moments are finite, and increasingly precious.

We think that changes the standard.

Where you stay matters. So does the room you sleep in, the table you are given, the people who meet you, the route you take, the boat you step aboard and the person waiting when something does not go quite to plan.

Often, the smallest details leave the longest impression.

Known personally

Hobbs & Wheeler is deliberately selective.

We prefer a smaller collection of places known properly to a long list known from afar.

We visit. We stay. We sail. We eat. We meet the people behind the places we recommend and return to those we believe are exceptional.

Over time, that creates something more valuable than inventory: a network of people, places and knowledge built through experience and trust.

If we would not choose it ourselves, or recommend it to someone close to us, it does not belong here.

Carefully considered

A good trip should feel remarkably simple.

Behind that simplicity may sit months of planning, dozens of conversations and hundreds of small decisions.

Preferences remembered rather than repeated. The right room rather than simply the right hotel. A particular pillow. Dinner arranged after a late arrival. A skipper who suits the company aboard. A guide who understands how you want to spend the day. Somewhere worth stopping that wasn’t in the guidebook.

This is the part we enjoy.

The research. The relationships. The detail. Knowing whom to call. And, when necessary, doing rather more than should reasonably be required to make something happen.

Mountains and water

Hobbs & Wheeler began with a love of two landscapes: the mountains and the sea.

They are places where the elements still matter. Where weather changes plans, where local knowledge counts, and where the best days are often shaped as much by instinct as itinerary.

Skiing and sailing were our way into those worlds, but they do not define them.

A week in the mountains might mean fresh tracks, long lunches, walking above the valley, fireside evenings or doing very little at all. Time on the water might mean sailing, swimming, diving, exploring a coastline or simply finding somewhere quiet to drop anchor.

The place comes first.

How best to enjoy it follows.

Our collection will grow carefully, and only where we believe we can know a place well enough to add something meaningful.
