Start with the map
Chamonix’s ski areas sit along a valley rather than around one central lift. That distinction shapes every day: where you sleep, how you travel and which terrain suits your party. Choosing a chalet before understanding this geography is the wrong way round.
For a mixed group, easy access to teaching areas may matter more than a dramatic view. Strong skiers might prioritise a particular sector, while non-skiers will appreciate being able to walk into town. The best base is the one that makes your week simpler.
Leave room for the conditions
A flexible plan is especially valuable here. Wind, visibility and snowpack can change the choice of terrain. Book qualified local guidance where needed, but resist turning the whole week into a fixed itinerary. Sometimes the sensible decision is a lower-altitude day and a long lunch.
